We do not like it when our children have coughs and colds, so we try to remedy them as soon as we can. However, getting small children to take things that make them feel better can be hard.
Most people turn to over-the-counter cough remedies to hopefully get their children to stop coughing, especially at night. However, there are better ways to treat a cough than with over-the-counter medicines.
Are Over-The-Counter Cough Remedies Effective For Kids?
Often parents will turn to over-the-counter cough remedies when their children come down with coughs and colds. Did you know though that there is little to no evidence that show that they are effective for treating coughs in kids?
The National Library of Medicine says that over-the-counter remedies for coughs in children have little to no evidence that shows that they are efficient. They also say that there are concerns about the safety of giving them to children and they should not be given to children under the age of six.
This for me is enough to know that I shouldn’t give them to my children.
I do admit that I used to give my first baby natural cough syrup at night when she had a bad cough because both she and us needed to sleep and they are easy to get and administer. But now I turn to my natural remedies to help us get sleep.
Easy Natural Cough Remedy For Kids That Is Effective
If over-the-counter medicines aren’t effective then we need something else for those times when the kids and you need some relief.
There are multiple natural and safe things you can do to relieve and remedy a cough in kids, but some of my favorites are to use ginger, lemon juice, and honey.
Ginger has antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it great for soothing coughs.
Honey and lemon juice (fresh is best, but bottled works as well) both help to break up mucus, and honey is also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.
What You Need To Make Ginger Juice An Easy Natural Cough Remedy For Kids:
- Water
- Cups – We like these bottles
- Fresh Ginger – Peeled or not, it doesn’t matter. I leave the peel on when I get organic ginger.
- Lemon – If you don’t have a whole lemon you can use bottled lemon juice.
- Honey – Organic, raw honey is best because pasteurized honey loses some of its benefits.
- Cayenne Pepper
How To Make Ginger Juice:
