I used to work in a daycare, and one of my favorite things to do with the kids was painting and making special personalized cards and things to send home for the parents. Now I enjoy doing it with my children and helping them make special things for their daddy.

I don’t know about your toddler, but my toddler loves to paint. However, it can be quite messy when they paint. They don’t have very refined movements and globs of paint end up everywhere making things take forever to dry.

I’ve found that using a toilet paper tube eliminates a lot of the mess. Toilet paper tubes are easy to hold so they aren’t dropping them in the paint. And you can only get so much paint on the bottom of the toilet paper tube, which helps eliminate globs. They also make cool patterns.

What You Will Need:

Supplies for Valentine's Day Painted heart card
  • Paper. I used red and white. Two colors are best if you want to put the handprints on it.
  • Quick dry washable paint. This is what we used.
  • Paper plate to put the paint on.
  • Toilet paper tubes (optional, but it looks cool)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

How To Make Valentine’s Day Painted Heart Card

  • Step 1 – Collect everything in one place
  • Step 2 – Pour paint onto the paper plates in a big enough circle to dip the whole toilet paper tube in at once.
  • Step 3 – Show your toddler how to dip one end of the toilet paper tube into the paint and then tap it on the paper.
  • Step 4 – Give your toddler the toilet paper tube, paper, and paint, and let them have fun! It’s okay if it doesn’t look perfect, they are learning and often the mess-ups turn out to be the cutest part.

  • Step 5 – Let the papers dry (and clean up the toddler. 🙂 ) It took about 15 minutes for them to dry, however, depending on your paint and how much there is it could take longer.
  • Step 6 – Fold one of the papers in half and cut out half a heart shape. If your child is old enough, just draw the half heart onto the paper and let them cut it out.

  • Step 7 – Trace the child’s handprint onto the other paper. You can do both handprints, or if you have multiple children like I do, do one of each child’s.

  • Step 7 – Cut out the handprints and anything else you want to add. I added a couple of little hearts. Again, if your child is old enough let them cut them out.

  • Step 8 – Tape down the middle two fingers on the hands to make the “I Love You” sign.

  • Step 9 – Tape or glue everything inside the card.

  • Step 10 – Write something on the card for your child. Don’t forget to let your child ‘write’ something of their own!
  • And there you have a Valentine’s Day painted heart card in hardly any time!
